INQUEST INTO DENGGI OUTBREAK IN SELANGOR SEES TWO EXCO MEMBERS CALLED UP TO FACE SELCAT

SHAH ALAM: Two state exco members are among those being summoned to appear before the Select Committee on Competency, Accountability and Transparency (Selcat) at its public hearing on ‘Dengue outbreak in Selangor’ next Tuesday.

They are state health, welfare, women and families affairs committee chairperson Dr Daroyah Alwi and local government, new village development and legalising of factories committee chairman Ean Yong Hian Wah.

Selcat chairperson Hannah Yeoh said the hearing is to look into the dengue outbreak, where Selangor has recorded the highest number of dengue cases in the country – at 63,198 cases, in 2015.

“According to the Health Ministry, between Jan 1 and Feb 2 this year, there were 7,335 dengue cases reported in the state,” she told a press conference here today.

Yeoh said the hearing is also to find out if the operations carried out by the local councils are effective and how funds are being managed in tackling the outbreak in the state.

“We want to find out through the hearing why is this happening in Selangor, and to see if this has to do with waste management” she said.

Yeoh, who is also Subang Jaya assemblyman and Selangor state assembly speaker, said health officers from the local councils and land and district offices in the state are also being summoned to attend the hearing.

“We do not want the (council) presidents to talk on their behalf, but to hear from these officers themselves,” she added.

She said they will try to table the findings at the coming state assembly meeting on March 28, or the next one.
